Phenomenology in Psychiatry: Methods for Integration

Image
A personal viewpoint piece published in The Lancet Psychiatry advocated for the integration of a phenomenological dimension to psychiatric research. Phenomenology centers around the subjective experience of the patient. A phenomenological approach to psychiatry aims to improve treatment outcomes by prioritizing patient accounts over a standardized “checklist” of symptoms. While phenomenological psychopathology is currently peripheral to mainstream psychiatry, prior editorials in the Lancet Psychiatry have called for renewed focus on phenomenology in treatment. One review from 2021 found that a phenomenological approach affords a richer definition of clinical delusions than that provided by the current psychiatric paradigm. Standard psychiatry defines delusions as “strongly-held false beliefs” and describes false beliefs as the result of faulty reasoning. Phenomenologists, by contrast, argue that delusions are not a result of errors in reasoning.

'Transcendental Phenomenology' by unown space is a meditation on everyday rituals

Image
Dubbed ‘performative furniture pieces’ by Swati Jain, lead designer of the transdisciplinary studio unown space, the artefacts that make up Transcendental Phenomenology are sculptural, a bit strange, and incredibly playful. Each piece in the collection—which includes a table, a tapestry, a bookshelf, a chair and a lamp—is meant to be multi-sensory, Jain states. With a focus on the ritualistic aspects of movement, the collection draws on phenomenological theory, creating a link between how each piece mediates relationships between the body, the object and the world. Springs, coils, sprockets and even natural light and air activate each piece in their own turn, bringing them alive and giving a new dimension to what could constitute furniture design . The Indian architectural designer explains how she drew inspiration from classical Indian ragas/ rasas (liminal moods) with different parts of the pieces, enabling varied elemental embodiments through active use of light or the sense of sm

Phenomenological Research on Depression Reveals Depths Beyond Diagnosis

Image
A new study reveals reveals the limitations of current diagnostic methods and research approaches for depression. Researchers Oskar Otto Frohn and Kristian Moltke Martiny from The Enactlab in Copenhagen argue that current methods often overlook the nuanced experiential aspects of depression, which are crucial for understanding and treating this complex experience. They propose that a phenomenological approach, which focuses on the individuals’s subjective experiences, offers a more comprehensive understanding of depression, thereby enhancing both diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy. “Fundamental to phenomenological psychopathology is the critique of the dominating biomedical model of psychopathology and its conformity to the method of operationalism,” Frohn and Martiny write. “The longing for objectivity and reliability seen within operationalism has led to the notion that psychopathological symptoms are explainable in biological terms, and that the field of psychopathology is
